I was thinking about you Koko…
Koko (born July 4, 1971) is a female gorilla who, according to Francine “Penny” Patterson, is able to understand more than 1,000 signs based on American Sign Language. Koko is the focus of The Gorilla Language Project, or Project Koko, is the longest continuous inter-species communications project of its kind in the world.
Koko has advanced further with language than any other non-human. Koko has a working vocabulary of over 1000 signs. However, Koko understands more than 2,000 words of spoken English, so she can follow what others are talking about. Koko usually initiates most of conversations with her human attendants and caretakers and she generally composes statements and questions averaging three to six words. Koko’s tested IQ of between 70 and 95 on a human scale, where 100 is considered “normal.”
Koko is a Western Lowland Gorilla. These gorillas are nearly extinct.

This short documentary is filmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo where the last 200 of our world’s silverback mountain gorillas are in a desperate fight for their survival.
