Today we have opportunity to see four planets on the night sky…
Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Venus and Mars, and all are shining bright this month. Today, May 14, 2014, just after sunset, nearly all of the naked-eye planets and the moon will be visible, strung out across the southern sky. From west to east, these are Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, and the moon. The four planets, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, are rarely seen together. Around sunset, look for Mercury… Mercury will appear as a small, yellow or orange dot to the glow of the sunset. Since Mercury will be near the horizon, buildings or mountains may obscure a view. Just east of Mercury will be Jupiter appearing to glow white with the reflected light of the sun. With access to a telescope, viewers may also see four of the moons of Jupiter. Look to the southeast to see the rust-colored planet of Mars and to the left of it see Saturn glowing a light yellow. Using a telescope you’ll be able to see Saturn’s rings. NOTE: Mercury will be in the best position for visibility on May 24.
